At the east end of Ile de la Cite is La Memorial des Martyres de la Deportation. 200,000 people were deported by the Nazis to death camps - each represented by a light in a prison and tomb like setting.

I admire the way the memorial recalls the claustrophobia of trains and tunnels. There's a light at the end of the tunnel and it's COMING AT YOU! The walls are lit as strings of railcars. And you are forced to move in an undeviating line towards your forbidding fate. A very accomplished recreation of the physical and psychological experience it bemoans. So who's the architect?
