Chris in Poitiers

I was away for a day and a bit, invited to the University of Poitiers to give a seminar on my research, and to visit with colleagues. Poitiers is quite an old city (now has about 100,000 people, 30,000 of which are university students). It has some amazing Romanesque and Medieval building, including "one of the greatest and most idiosyncratic churches in France, Notre-Dame-la-Grande, begun in the twelfth-century reign of Eleanor and recently renovated; strangely enough, pigeon droppings and pollution weren't the major concern, but the salt from the market stalls of fishmongers and salt merchants seeping into the ground and up into the church's facade" . These are relics from my favorite period in history.

Hi guys!
Your blog is great, though a little envy-inducing on a chilly, wet afternoon in April in Ontario! Love the pictures and commentary on art, fabric, etc. Gives me a little vicarious taste of Paris in the spring. Glad to know all is well and that you are settling in just fine and meeting friendly Parisians. The school term is drawing to an end (though ESL goes on year-round, forever!!) Sorry we won't have Sarah back next year, but I know she made the right choice for herself. That little May is a darling!
Thinking of you,

Kim

And Sophie said that there isn't a thing to see in Poitiers! I remember telling people in Japan that there was nothing much in or around London... and being amazed by the farmland between Toronto and London upon our return.

Nice pictures, great blog!
Take care,
Dave
